Si l'on conteste la particule et le titre d'Antoine, comte de Rivarol, né à Bagnols-sur-Cèze (Gard) en 1753, personne ne met en cause son esprit, son style, sa finesse, son impertinence et son indépendance de pensée. Le Français par excellence, disait de lui Voltaire qui l'admirait. Il figure au premier rang des hommes les plus spirituels du XVIIIe siècle. Son succès fut considérable ; autant qu'à ses maximes, ciselées selon la grande tradition des moralistes français, il le devait à ses ouvrages satiriques, comme Le petit almanach de nos grands hommes (1788), à ses reparties et à ses bons mots dans les salons qui se l'arrachaient, et ses ennemis ne parvenaient pas à le rabaisser en rappelant en toute occasion qu'il était fils d'aubergiste. […] En 1789, à la différence de ses amis Mirabeau, Talleyrand et Chamfort, Rivarol, homme pauvre qui s'est toujours refusé à dépendre de la protection d'un Grand, combat la Révolution montante. […] Il prévoit, dès l'été et l'automne 89, les dérapages et l'échec de la Révolution, mais il sait voir les faiblesses et les erreurs de la noblesse. Le parlementaire et écrivain anglais Burke le définit comme le Tacite de la Révolution. Contraint d'émigrer en juin 1792, il continue, en Belgique, en Angleterre, en Allemagne, à défendre le principe monarchique et la langue de Racine, tout en jetant, sur le comportement de certains émigrés, un regard critique. À Hambourg, en 1797, il entreprend la rédaction d'une œuvre qu'il veut monumentale : Le Nouveau Dictionnaire de la langue française, mais il ne parviendra à achever, et à publier, que le Discours préliminaire à ce dictionnaire, un essai philosophique brillant.
